Message	and hitting the high revs is momentum... the engine is in an unloaded situation and is free to spin.. the rev limiter may cut the spark and fuel, but the motor is in a high acceleration situation and the motor will just free spin past the "rev limit" in this type of situation is when one could use a clutch or flywheel brake that would engage past a given rpm.
